Greetings from The Asian American Law School Student Association

Greetings from The Asian American Law School Student Association

Reiko Fukuyama

Vice President, APALSA

We hope that you all had a wonderful summer.  For those of you who are new to John Marshall—Welcome!  We look forward to meeting you.  The Asian American Law School Student Association (APALSA) is an affinity student group that welcomes ALL students, including those of Asian American descent, and students who have an interest in Asian American issues. In the past two years, APALSA has strived to provide students with monthly meetings, study tip sessions, networking events, volunteer opportunities and more.

Events

This year we held our first “Chamber Luncheon” series, where students got an opportunity to sit in chambers with federal district court judges for an informal lunch. During these lunches, students were able to ask the judges about their work day, how each judge interacts with their law clerks, and what path these judges took to the bench.

APALSA takes pride in collaborating with other student groups. In the fall semester, APALSA collaborates with several student organizations to host Novemberfest, an annual networking event where a panel of diverse practitioners (including alumni) and judges discuss their experiences and the challenges that each faced as a minority in the legal profession. In addition, we also participate in the Student Bar Association events, such as the Holiday Soiree, where APALSA, along with the other affinity groups, has a table displaying Asian cultural traditions and snacks. This is a great opportunity to not only learn about Asian culture but to also learn about all the other diverse cultures that make up our student body. This fall, in addition to Novemberfest and the year-end Holiday Soiree, we would like to organize an exam-taking tips session and a small-scale networking event where we invite a practitioner to discuss what it is like to practice law as a minority in Illinois.

In the spring semester, APALSA also participates in the school-wide Diversity Week organized by the Office of Diversity Affairs. Last semester, we showed a documentary, and participated in the Tastes Around the World potluck where we served Chinese food. In the past, we have also held study tips session where we invited professors and judges to discuss study tips, particularly for 1Ls, who are new to the law school exam.

Off campus, APALSA encourages our members to give back to the community by volunteering at various events.  Such events have involved the the Chinese American Bar Association, the Korean American Bar Association, the Japanese American Service Committee, and the Indo-American Center. We share information with our members and encourage them to become involved with volunteer opportunities, community events and scholarship opportunities through email blasts and Facebook Page posts.

Our first general meeting will be held at the beginning of the semester.  Please be on the lookout for our eCommons and Facebook posts.  APALSA will also be holding elections for board positions this fall semester and we encourage interested candidates to apply. We will announce our election on eCommons, with information on how to apply.  Current board members and positions, along with a brief overview of APALSA can be found on the JMLS Student Organization webpage: http://www.jmls.edu/students/organizations/apalsa/.
